Performing surgery to physically remove as much of the cancer as possible is usually part of treatment whenever feasible.  The problem with this, is that when you cut into a tumor there is a high risk of the cancer cells releasing into the bloodstream and causing the cancer to potentially spread.
Surgery may be the only type of therapy that is recommended, or else it will be performed before or after chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
